Lady barber opens Tonsorial Parlor

Master barber/stylist Dee Goodman opened the Tonsorial Parlor in Madras on Jan. 1.    Stemming from the word "tonsor," which means a shearer or barber, her Tonsorial Parlor is an upscale barber shop with competitive prices.    "I had intended for it to be spa-like, but decided the current economy wouldn't support that," Goodman said.    For 36 years, she operated the Lake Tahoe barber shop at Harrah's, then decided to move to Madras where members of her family live.    Decorated in earth tones, Southwestern motif and leather chairs, the shop has a relaxing atmosphere.    Goodman noted she took four years of barber training in Nevada and is a master barber as well as being Roffler trained. Roffler is a technique of using a straight razor to cut and blend lengths of hair.    She said she can cut women's hair as well as men's. "If women bring me a picture of what they want, I can put it together," she said.    The parlor provides exceptional hair services and a complete grooming experience, including traditional hot lather shaves, facials and hand grooming in a comfortable, masculine and relaxing environment. She specializes in styled haircuts, flattops and fades.    To keep customers from leaving her shop with bits of itchy hair clinging to them, Goodman finishes off all her cuts with a complementary hot lather neck shave, shoulder massage, shampoo and mini manicure, if desired.    Walk-ins are welcome, or people can call and schedule a same-day appointment at 325-4009. "We guarantee our services. If your cut is too short, the next one is complimentary," she said.    Located at 161 S.E. Fifth St., Madras, across from Charlie's OK Barber Shop, Goodman put in a plug for her competitor.    "I want to thank Charlie for not having a problem with me locating here. When I told him I wanted to open a barber shop, he said `Go for it,'" she laughed.    The Tonsorial Parlor is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday. Goodman usually takes Wednesday and Sunday off, but appointments are still available seven days a week.
